 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) is also known as Selena, is an American Tejano performer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to fashion and music made her one the most well-known entertainers from Mexico ever. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" Based on Latin albums and Latin chart of songs. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her style of clothing. She also ranks among the most popular Latin musicians ever and is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared on the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. She was often criticised in the 1980s and refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which was a male-dominated genre. But her popularity increased following her win of the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. During that time, her brother became her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. The critics of the music called it the "breakthrough record" of her career because of its commercial success. "Como la Flor" is one of the singles became her most beloved hero song. Live! (1993) was awarded the Best American/Mexican Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to win this award. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most successful Latin albums sold in the United States. The album was widely acclaimed as the first Tejano music album to be commercially viable and quickly became one the most popular Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
